What Find My Chinese Name does

Find My Chinese Name gives English speakers an authentic two- or three-character Chinese name, chosen from their birth date. We read your chart's day master and five-element balance (the BaZi method), then pick real given-name characters that fit it, often with a source in classical poetry. It is a naming method, not fortune-telling, and not a phonetic translation of your English name.

How it works

  1. Your birth date sets your chart. We find your day master and which of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) your chart leans toward. What is BaZi?
  2. Characters are chosen to balance it. Each given character carries an element and a meaning, drawn from the classical poetry of the Book of Songs and the Songs of Chu, with rare and obscure characters filtered out. Browse common name characters in the character dictionary.
  3. You get the full picture. Pronunciation, the meaning of each character, the poetry behind it when there is one, and the other names that also fit. How Chinese names work

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a Chinese name?

Enter your first name and your birth date above. In about 30 seconds you get a real Chinese name with its pronunciation, meaning and the reasoning behind each character. You can also look at the other names that fit your chart and pick the one you like.

Is this a translation of my English name?

No. A phonetic transliteration (like 艾玛 for Emma) only copies sounds and usually reads as foreign to native speakers. Your given name is chosen for meaning, from characters Chinese people are genuinely named with. If you add your last name, the surname is matched to its sound.

Can I choose my own Chinese name?

Yes. Many people pick their own. The safest way is to use real given-name characters, keep it to two or three characters, and have a native speaker check it. You can look up any character in our dictionary to see its meaning and element.

Do I need my birth time?

No. Your birth date is enough to read your day master and five-element balance. Adding the hour makes the chart more complete. If you only know your birth year, you still get a name, read from the year alone.

Is it free?

Yes. Your name, pronunciation, meaning and a certificate are free. Optional extras: a name seal pack ($4.90), a seven-section deep reading ($9.90), and a reading by a native scholar ($128).

Is this fortune-telling?

No. We use the traditional Chinese birth chart (BaZi) only as a naming method: it shows which of the five elements your chart leans toward, and the name is built to balance them. Nothing here predicts your future or promises luck.
